Annual report 2023–24.

What we did, what it cost, and what the evidence shows. We publish this report because the people who fund and refer to us deserve to know whether the work is working.

Year in summary

312 participants. Three countries. One programme.

In the year to March 2024, Beside ran its programme in Lebanon, Egypt, and Zambia. We worked with 38 trained peer facilitators and supervised them through weekly group calls with qualified clinicians.

Completion rates (defined as attending at least four of five sessions) were 71% in Lebanon, 68% in Egypt, and 63% in Zambia. Below our target of 75%, and below trial conditions. We discuss the gap in the full report.

Post-programme PHQ-9 scores showed a mean reduction of 4.8 points compared with intake, across all three countries combined. This is consistent with the trial evidence, though our sample size is too small for statistical significance at country level.

Total expenditure: £820,000. Cost per participant: £2,628. Cost per completed programme: £3,702. Estimated cost per DALY averted: £89–112, depending on the disability weight applied.
